How to Wash and Care for Printed Cotton Bedsheets So the Colours Last
Share
A good printed cotton bedsheet should stay soft and bright for years. Most fading and roughness come from small washing habits, not the fabric itself. Here is how to care for your Jaipuri, floral and block print bedsheets so they keep looking new.
Before the first wash
- Wash new printed bedsheets separately the first one or two times. Some extra dye can come out in early washes, and you do not want it on your whites.
- Read the care label and follow it first.
Washing
- Use cold or lukewarm water. Hot water fades printed colours faster and can shrink cotton.
- Choose a mild detergent. Avoid bleach on coloured prints.
- Turn the sheet inside out or fold the printed side inwards to reduce rubbing on the print.
- Use a gentle cycle and do not overload the machine, so the sheet has room to move and rinse properly.
Drying
- Dry in the shade. Strong direct sunlight is one of the biggest reasons printed bedsheets fade.
- Shake the sheet out before hanging to reduce wrinkles.
- Take it off the line as soon as it is dry.
Ironing and storage
- Iron on a medium cotton setting, ideally on the reverse side.
- Store bedsheets in a cool, dry cupboard. A cotton bag or old pillow cover keeps them dust free.
- Rotate between two or three sets so each one lasts longer.
Why cotton is worth the care
Cotton is breathable, soft on the skin and gets softer with every wash. With these simple habits, a good cotton bedsheet will stay comfortable through every season.
