When you shop for bedsheets, you will see numbers like 200 TC, 280 TC or even 1000 TC. Many people assume a bigger number always means a better sheet. The truth is a little different. Here is what thread count really means and how to use it when you buy.

What is thread count?

Thread count (TC) is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It adds up the threads running lengthwise and the threads running across. So a 280 TC sheet has 280 threads in every square inch.

Is a higher thread count always better?

Not necessarily. Up to a point, more threads give a smoother, denser fabric. Beyond that, very high numbers are often reached by twisting several thin threads together and counting each strand separately. That can make the number look impressive without making the sheet softer or longer-lasting. Very dense fabrics can also feel warmer, because less air passes through.

What thread count should you choose?

• Around 150 to 200 TC: light and airy, good for budget everyday use.
• Around 200 to 400 TC: the sweet spot for most cotton bedsheets. Soft, durable and still breathable, which suits the Indian climate well.
• Very high numbers: can feel heavier and warmer, and are worth checking carefully, since the yarn quality matters more than the number.

What matters more than thread count

• The fibre: 100% cotton breathes and absorbs moisture far better than polyester or microfiber blends.
• The yarn quality: good-quality cotton yarn feels softer and lasts longer than a higher count of weak yarn.
• The finish and print: colourfast prints and a soft finish keep the sheet looking good wash after wash.
